Artificial Intelligence has sprung up rather exponentially in the past few years, and this is especially possible because of the previous innovations and achievements in computer science, engineering, and technology

From as early as the 1900s, Black STEM pioneers were already laying critical foundations for what would eventually become modern artificial intelligence. These innovators’ core concepts include high-performance computing, computer science, mathematics, information systems technology, security technology, and semiconductor engineering. Their contributions shaped the model and algorithms that created today’s AI systems. 

In this article, we recognize these pioneers and their achievements, accomplished in an untoward and adverse environment. 

1. Philip Emeagwali 

Phillip Eneagwali is a Nigerian whose education was disrupted by the civil war. He joined the army at 13 and later moved to the United States, where he studied mathematics at Oregon State University.

Emeagwali is distinguished by his grand inventions in computer science. He saw an innate efficiency in the way bees operate with honeycomb, determining that computers that use this process could be the most efficient and powerful. Emulating this model, Emeagwali used 65,000 processors to invent the world’s fastest computer, which performs computations at 3.1 billion calculations per second. 

Emeagwali won the Gordon Bell Prize for price-performance and high performance in a computing application for contributing a novel mathematical equation to oil-reservoir modeling. His computers are currently being used to forecast the weather and to predict the likelihood and effects of future global warming.

Together, his work supports AI by enabling the parallel computing power needed for tasks like pattern recognition and large-scale data analysis.

2. Marie Van Brittan Brown

Marie Van Brittan Brown developed the first home security system. Her invention was the first closed-circuit television security system and paved the way for modern home security systems used today. Working irregular hours in a high-crime area, she invented a way to see who was at her door.

She invented a security system which consisted of four peepholes, a sliding camera, television monitors, and two-way microphones. These items created a closed-circuit television system for surveillance, also known as CCTV. The two-way microphones allowed Brown to communicate with the person outside. She also had a remote that would allow her to unlock the door from a safer distance. Lastly, she could press an emergency button that would send an alarm to the police or security.

Brown’s contribution to home security led to her invention being cited in 32 subsequent patent applications. Her invention formed a system that is still relevant in today’s society.  

Brown’s invention influenced AI by laying the foundation for intelligent surveillance systems, enabling today’s AI-powered tools such as facial recognition, motion detection, and automated threat alerts used in modern security technologies.

Dr. Victor Lawrence

Born in Ghana, Dr. Victor Lawrence is an Electrical Engineer who received his BSc. and PhD degrees from the University of London. He is renowned for his work in global telecommunications. He improved the transmission for the modern internet by making high-speed connections more available. 

His contributions paved the way for multiple developments in broadband, DSL, HDTV technologies, and wireless data transfer and stimulated the growth of the global Internet. His work advanced data encoding and transmission, modem technology, silicon chip design, ATM switching and protocols, as well as speech, audio, and digital video technologies.

Spending much of his career at Bell Labs, he manipulated data for faster and more reliable travel over telephone lines. He streamlined signal travel while using less bandwidth, and his chipsets formed the heart of voice-band modems and DSL technologies that both use telephone lines. Dr. Lawrence helped turn the internet into a global industry useful for more than simple text-based functions.

Dr. Victor Lawrence’s work influenced AI by providing the high-speed, reliable data transmission and digital signal processing infrastructure that modern AI systems depend on for real-time communication, large-scale data transfer, and speech, audio, and video processing.

Dorothy Vaughan

Dorothy Vaughan studied mathematics at Wilberforce University and subsequently joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), a group of female mathematicians who performed complex calculations by hand. Vaughan transformed this opportunity into a 28-year career as a mathematician and programmer at Langley Research Center. 

Vaughan developed algebraic methods for calculating machines and other hard-to-solve problems for which she was specifically recommended to supervise. She also specialized in flight path calculations, which contributed to the Scout Project, a solid-fuel satellite system. Vaughan also calculated flight trajectories enabling Mercury-Atlas 6, the first U.S. human spaceflight program, which sent John Glenn into orbit.

She served as the first African-American manager at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, formally NACA. Dorothy helped to shape the space race, in addition to race and gender relations. She influenced Artificial Intelligence by helping pioneer early computer programming and algorithmic problem-solving, which form the foundation of modern automated and intelligent systems.

Dr. Clarence Ellis

Dr. Clarence Ellis was the first African-American to earn a PhD in computer science. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from Beloit College in Wisconsin, where he was the only black undergraduate.

Afterwards, Dr. Ellis enrolled in MIT for graduate school, but only stayed a short time because of his civil rights activism. He eventually attended graduate school at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he worked on hardware, software, and applications of the ILLIAC IV supercomputer.

Dr. Ellis held positions at Bell Telephone Laboratories, IBM, Xerox, Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (now Los Alamos National Laboratory), and Argonne National Laboratory. 

Dr. Ellis worked at Bell Labs from 1969 to 1972 on probability theory applied to computing. In 1972, he became an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder to work on operating systems research. Afterwards, he headed a group at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) that developed Officetalk, the first office system to use icons and Ethernet to allow people to collaborate from a distance. 

Dr. Ellis is one of the pioneers of the field of operational transformation, which examines functionality in collaborative systems. Operational transformation exists in a host of computer applications, including Apache Wave and Google Docs. 

Dr. Ellis influenced AI by pioneering collaborative computing techniques that enable real-time coordination and adaptive intelligent systems.

Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville

Dr. Granville attended Dunbar High School, a prestigious African American high school in Washington, D.C. She excelled in her studies and, upon graduation, attended Smith College on a scholarship, earning her Bachelor of Arts in mathematics.

Evelyn Granville performed pioneering work in the field of computing. She was the second black woman to earn a Ph.D. from an American university. Afterwards, she joined IBM’s Aviation Space and Information Systems division, where she worked on various projects for the Apollo space program, including digital computer techniques.

Her work here played a key role in developing software for space exploration. During the height of the U.S. space race, she worked on NASA’s Project Vanguard and Project Mercury. These projects were pivotal in launching America’s first satellites and sending astronauts into space. She developed computer programs that analyzed satellite orbits and spacecraft trajectories, helping ensure the success of these groundbreaking space endeavors. Her work on these projects contributed directly to the advancement of the United States’ space program, which eventually led to the moon landing.

She influenced AI by pioneering the use of computers to solve complex mathematical problems automatically, a practice that underlies today’s data-driven systems.

As Qualtrics explains in this research on brand trust, it “grows as a brand consistently lives its values and meets the expectations it has established in the minds of its customers.” A recent Clutch brand authenticity survey found that 97 percent of consumers say authenticity influences their decisions, 85 percent say they bought from a brand because it felt authentic, and 70 percent are willing to pay more for brands they perceive as real. Those are bottom-line numbers, not soft metrics.

Why AI Makes Trust Even More Important

Marketers already use artificial intelligence in everyday marketing. Brands use it to generate copy, respond to customer messages, and personalize recommendations. Used well, AI can absolutely enhance the customer experience. 

But there’s a growing paradox. 

As AI gets better at sounding human, consumers are becoming more skeptical of content that feels too perfect, too polished, or too generic. A recent Forbes analysis of consumer research shows that AI‑like content makes consumers trust brands less and see them as less authentic, relatable, and trustworthy. AI can support your systems, but only the humans in your business can earn your customers’ trust.

4 Ways To Scale Brand Trust

Publishing more posts, emails, or ads does not automatically build trust. Consistently delivering on your promises does, and that equity compounds over time. Practice Transparent Communication: Research from the Kearney Consumer Institute on “Building trust in an age of skepticism” shows that in a low‑trust environment, brands earn consumer confidence by being clear and consistent about what customers can expect. Kearney highlights that brands that “avoid potential trustbusters like shrinkflation, price increases, formula changes, and shifting return policies—even when tinkering with the experience would improve the brand’s margins.” 
  2. Deliver Consistently On Your Promises: As the Yale School of Management explains in its piece on navigating brand trust in modern marketing, trust grows when a brand’s actions reliably match what it says it stands for. They note that brands must not only offer a quality product, but also provide quality service by “attending to consumers’ needs, delivering on promises, and demonstrating ample knowledge and expertise in the category.” In a crowded, skeptical market, consistently doing what you say you will do becomes a core way to earn and sustain brand trust over time.
  3. Be Open About How You Use AI: As the World Economic Forum notes in its discussion of consumer trust and AI, companies are expected to demonstrate that their systems are ethical, explainable, and used with care, and those that proactively do so are more likely to be trusted and recommended by consumers. In their report, they claim that “those who openly communicate in this way about how their technology works are more likely to be trusted by consumers to use AI to its full potential.” 
  4. Leverage Social Proof As A Trust Signal: According to an article by Wharton Executive Education, social proof is one of the most important trust signals for modern businesses. Customers increasingly rely on reviews, ratings, and visible demand, like a busy store or long line, to decide which brands to trust. When people can see that others have chosen and endorsed a business, it reassures them that the company is legitimate and likely to deliver a good experience.

Black media has come a long way since Freedom’s Journal’s 1827 debut. Founded by Samuel Cornish and John Russwurm, a four-page, four-column standard-sized weekly hit the stands on March 16th. Freedom’s Journal was the first Black-owned and operated publication in the United States, paving the way for media as we now know it.

Black media ownership is a cornerstone of the Black community. Providing valuable resources, coveted information, and a strong glue connecting the culture. Black media recorded the history of yesterday and will inspire the generation of tomorrow.

Black Media Moved The People

Fast forward to the year 1905, the age of “The Great Migration.” At the center of this mass exodus of African-Americans from the South sat The Chicago Defender. This popular publication positioned Chicago as a place of opportunity for Black people. The power of the press guided Black families from the South to prosperity in the North, Midwest, and Western states of the country.

Breaking Barriers

The work pioneered by The Chicago Defender shaped the future of America’s most successful daily newspaper, Atlanta Daily World. This newspaper successfully obtained advertisements from national companies such as Coca-Cola and employed the first reporter, Harry McAlpin, to cover a presidential press conference.

Shaping Black Pride

The media has the power to define beauty, highlight success, and provoke change. Publications such as Ebony, Jet, and Essence played a crucial role in how African-Americans maintained pride, celebrated beauty, and rallied for the Black community. Though ownership of some of these publications has transferred several times, the core has always been Black excellence.

The Nieman Reports goes on to explain how Jet is credited for igniting the civil rights movement in 1955. Jet published photographs of 14-year-old Emmett Till’s mutilated body. This information sparked the mobilization of the Black community and fueled organizations to invoke change.

Turning The Dial

Detroit, MI, was home to the first Black-owned television station in the United States. Named WGPR-TV, this station was founded by William Venoid Banks, according to VOP News, a Media company. This revolutionary accomplishment paved the way for the January 25th, 1980 launch of the iconic Black Entertainment Television, aka, BET. The TV channel was created out of the desire to have the story of the African-American community told, according to a video created by BET to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Culture-shifting programs such as “Bobby Jones Gospel,” “Video Soul,” “BET News,” “106 and Park,” and “Citia’s World” were a mirror of the culture and a lifeline to the community.

Domination of The Silver Screen

Spike Lee has set high standards in the film industry, impacting Black writers, according to Vocal Media. Lee’s self-funded debut feature film, “She’s Gotta Have It,” premiered in 1986, shocking the world with its unapologetic and intimate portrayals of Black characters. Lee’s vision helped open the door to writing diverse stories of Black characters and the African American experience.

The Claim To Creative Freedom

The 1990’s creative sketch comedy show, “In Living Color,” was created, written, and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. This show marked history and is known for being the claim to fame for several modern-day talents. The TV program has also been credited for the transformation of the Super Bowl halftime show. Before 1993, halftime shows were more of a chance to refill drinks and grab snacks. In 1992, “In Living Color” produced a halftime show, causing Super Bowl viewers to switch channels and not return to the game. In 1993, Michael Jackson became the first person to headline the Super Bowl halftime show.

A Digital Pivot Meant More Access

As the world moved online, so did the opportunity for more Black media outlets. The new digital age ushered in an entire landscape ripe for creating. Digital media outlets such as Her Agenda, The Curvy Fashionista, PaSH Magazine, The Shade Room, Blavity, and more provide readers access to representation, culture, validation, and community previously barred due to print being the primary method of distribution.

Technology has changed the way content is both made and consumed. Black creatives have impacted the culture of entire apps such as Musical.ly, Vine, and now TikTok, according to Essence. The culture is highly visible with dance challenges, the creation of an entire lingo, street style, and comedy. More modern series appear on platforms such as YouTube, with “An Awkward Black Girl” by Issa Rae leading to one of the most popular shows of the 2010s, “Insecure.”

More elaborate productions, such as the talk show “Unwine With Tasha K” hosted by Tasha K, or alternatively, social commentary from hosts such as Lovelyti, are actively shaping media’s creation, distribution, and monetization. Variety gives an exclusive interview with KeKe Palmer discussing her new digital network, which is a fusion of traditional Hollywood and independent studios. The media companies give us beautifully produced work packed with culture, storytelling, and a stronger sense of community. While pioneers such as Tyler Perry build entire ecosystems with legacy projects, such as Tyler Perry Studios.

A Legacy Of Innovation

The past 100 years of Black media highlight great achievements. The founders and creators believed in the power of media. The African-American community benefited by gaining access to great storytelling, compelling art, and memorable forms of self-expression.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in the workplace is now more prevalent than ever. In a recent Gallup poll, four out of ten U.S employees (38%) reported that their organization has adopted AI technology. The same Gallup poll, which looked at 2025 Q4 workplace data, found that 12% of employees use it daily, an increase of 2% from just the previous quarter of that same year. 

If these numbers are any indication, it seems that AI in the workplace will not be slowing down any time soon, which, for many, begs the question: With the increase of AI applications, will my career become obsolete?

The reality appears to be more nuanced than a simple yes or no. A National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) study, analyzing AI adoption from 2010 to 2023, found that AI obsolescence most often impacts specific tasks rather than entire roles. 

In any case, it may be helpful to audit your career for potential AI-obsolescence. To do so, ask yourself the following:

1. How Common Is AI Used In My Profession/Role?

The previously mentioned Gallup poll notes that AI use is most common in knowledge-based fields such as technology, finance, and education. It is less widespread in production and service sectors such as retail, manufacturing, and healthcare. 

In addition, people who work remotely, such as those in desk and office-based occupations, tend to use AI more frequently, as do those in leadership roles. 69% of leaders told Gallup that they use AI a few times a year, compared to only 40% of individual contributors. 

Microsoft Research Study released in 2025, looking at current AI usage, found AI to be most applicable in communication roles (interpreters/translators, writers, and editors), customer service roles (sales reps, telemarketers, concierges), and STEM professions (data Scientists, mathematicians, web developers). The jobs less likely to successfully apply AI, in contrast, were those that require physical and hands-on interaction, such as medical/healthcare workers (nurses, phlebotomists, surgeons), skilled workers (painters, roofers, floor sanders), and service/hospitality workers (housekeepers and dishwashers).

Although this study focuses on AI applicability, not replacement, it is valuable to understand which fields benefit most from AI usage so that you can adapt accordingly.

2. Which Of My Core Responsibilities Can Be Automated By AI?

The NBER study on AI and the labor market concluded that if AI can perform most of the tasks in a job, then labor demand for that role tends to decrease. Conversely, it found that if AI impacts just a few tasks, then labor demand for that role may actually increase, as workers can reallocate their efforts to tasks that are not easily automated, thereby increasing productivity.  

To determine how many/which of your responsibilities are susceptible to AI, map out your daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Clearly identify which of these tasks can be automated by AI systems and which cannot. The tasks that are not prone to automation are those that require a human touch, such as problem-solving and strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and leadership capabilities.

Lastly, make sure you are documenting your achievements. Ensuring you have a running list of the irreplaceable contributions you make to the business (those that can not be replaced by AI) is always valuable.

3. What Are My Skill Gaps?

One thing that the rapid adaptation of AI tells us is that the workplace will continue to change and evolve. As it does, so should you. To ensure you are well prepared, take stock of your current skills and compare them to emerging industry demands. Conduct a skills gap analysis: what are you missing?

Pro Tip: When looking for areas to up-skill, focus on strengthening those that AI struggles with, such as relationship management and leadership.

Once you identify the gaps, look into ways to address them. How can you up-skill and/or diversify your competencies? There are courses you can take, as well as certifications you can earn. Perhaps you can engage in cross training and/or early adaptation of tools and technologies to make yourself even more versatile.

As you go through these steps, it is perhaps of most importance not to forget about the people element. Reach out to a mentor or peer for guidance. Those around you can often better help highlight what sets you apart. Be proactive about maintaining a strong network that can aid in your growth and development, as there are certain things that will never become obsolete.

Agentic AI Offers Convenience In Daily Life

Pros

With the click of a button, you can order food and have it delivered from a Waymo vehicle. Pudu Bellabot serves food at restaurants, which eliminates the need for a waitress; not to mention the convenient Point of Sale (POS) systems that allow you to pay at the table on the device.  

Cons

Contrarily, AI is essentially taking money from what could have been a delivery driver and a waitress. By creating convenience and quicker methods to provide customer service, it eliminates the need for a working person; this also takes away the human aspect of encounters, because the robot will ask: “Hey, how’s your day going?”

Agentic AI Can Make Daily Workflow Lighter

Pros

According to IBM, agentic AI can manage business processes autonomously and handle complex tasks like reordering supplies and optimizing supply chain operations. It can automate internal workflows to make it easier on human employees without the need for their physical intervention.

Cons

Introducing AI in business eliminates the need to hire additional people to do several tasks.

Although AI is capable of handling a heavy workload, it is still a machine, and machines malfunction. This leaves the doors open to potential data leaks, oversights, errors, fraud, and more. The human aspect of common sense, intuition, brainstorming, ethical and moral judgment is obsolete when a robot is left to decide the best decision.

Agentic AI Will Continue To Expand

Pros

Expansions mean progression and more opportunity to capitalize on not only technology but also executing tasks and goals, which is its main purpose. Its ability to work fast and effectively will greatly benefit businesses. 

According to MoveWorks, by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will incorporate Agentic AI to manage complex tasks and workflows. Organizations that embrace this shift today will gain a massive competitive advantage—automating decision-making, streamlining operations, and unlocking new levels of productivity.

Cons

Unfortunately, the very things that make AI great are what make it a great risk. Incorporating Agentic AI to manage tasks will change the trajectory of the workforce, as it will impact future generations, as the need for a human manager won’t be necessary.

Ultimately, no matter how much Agentic AI is integrated, the need for human life in the workforce will remain. If it is looked at as assistance as opposed to a means of replacement, the two could co-exist productively.

Though there are pros and cons to every situation, it is imperative to do research on things that aren’t familiar or new. As technology advances daily, it’s inevitable that we stay abreast of updates. Agentic AI is designed to benefit businesses, yet it eliminates human workers. However, many Gen Z and millennials are ahead of the curve in entrepreneurship as their preferred route of employment.

As we begin the new year, it’s a good time to align our refreshed energy towards funding our goals. According to AIPRM’s statistics compilation, women are just a quarter (26%) of STEM employees in the United States of America, and as of 2024, there were only 12 female-led STEM companies on the Fortune 500 list.  

Additionally, it’s been found that women researchers receive less grant money on average than men, with women’s average grant award being $342,000, while men’s average grant award is $659,000.

In lieu of this, several organizations have sprung up to address this gap and further inclusion. To help women move forward in their STEM careers, here are some grants and innovation funds to explore:

The AAUW Community Action Grants

These grants seek to overcome barriers to girls’ participation in STEM by funding innovative, community-based programs that create pathways for K-12 girls to develop STEM confidence, skills, and identity, and encourage them to pursue STEM higher education and careers.

It offers up to $75,000 to support nonprofits and educational institutions helping girls with the preparation needed to thrive in technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 

They support programs that provide hands-on learning, mentorship from women in STEM, family involvement, and confidence-building experiences. Additionally, they are interested in helping girls from historically underrepresented communities.

Becoming a grantee means joining a community that offers pathways for collaboration, visibility, and growth, and joining a network that fosters shared learning, elevates voices shaping the future of STEM, and builds capacity for long-term impact.

They are looking for organizations with these requirements:

  • U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit (or fiscal sponsor) or K–12 institution, with projects implemented in the U.S.
  • A demonstrated ability to design and deliver effective K–12 programs for girls
  • Using participant feedback to continuously refine and improve programming
  • The leadership and programs reflect and actively engage the communities served.
  • Maintaining transparent systems to track, manage, and report grant funds responsibly.

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science Program

The program awards five postdoctoral scientists annually with grants for their contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations. It operates out of this belief: the world needs science, and science needs women because women in science have the power to change the world. 

It is the U.S. component of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Fellowships program. So far, it has awarded 110 postdoctoral women scientists over $5 million in grants. Each year, the program attracts talented applicants from diverse STEM fields, representing some of the nation’s leading academic institutions and laboratories, towards the shortlisting of five postdoctoral scientists to receive grants, mentoring, and networking. 

The current cohort represented a range of research areas, including physiology, sensory biology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, and developmental biology. 

To apply, candidates must have completed their PhD and have started in their postdoctoral research position by January 31, 2026, and must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The deadline for the next cohort is February 13, 2026. To learn more about this program, explore their website.

The Science & Technology Pioneer Award by the Cartier Women’s Initiative

This award is dedicated to recognizing women impact entrepreneurs at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation. Open to women entrepreneurs from any country and sector, this award highlights disruptive solutions built around unique, protected, or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances that require heavy R&D, a long commercialization cycle, high capital intensity, technology risk, and complexity.  

The award is in three tiers: $100,000 for the first-place awardee, $60,000 for the second-place awardee, and $30,000 for the third-place awardee.  It also includes a fellowship program with a combination of 1:1 training and collective workshops.

Lastly, the program aims to bridge connections between the grant awardees and our current community through mentorship from jury members during the fellowship, access to a lifelong community of 500+ active community members, and ongoing support for the development of the fellows’ impact businesses.

They’re in search of businesses with the following features:

  • Deep-tech solution built on unique, hard-to-replicate scientific or engineering advances with strong industry and societal impact.
  • Business intentionally designed to solve social or environmental problems, with impact embedded, measurable, and scalable.

Although it is not a traditional grant, JLABS provides laboratory space, equipment, and up to $50,000 in services for healthcare startups. It also gives the awardees access to their global incubator network, which includes expertise, community, industry connections, and entrepreneurial programs.

Susan G. Komen-Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance Metastatic Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Research Grant

In Honor Of Julia K. Levine 

Komen awards grants to support cutting-edge breast cancer research that will provide the greatest benefit to patients. They are focused on conquering metastatic and aggressive breast cancers, advancing personalized breast care, and eliminating breast cancer disparities and inequities.

This grant provides funding to support innovative research focused on metastatic invasive lobular carcinoma (mILC) that will hopefully unlock new knowledge about metastatic lobular breast cancer, advance patient care, and improve patient outcomes.

They are looking for independent investigators working at non-profit institutions and organizations, and the award amount is $400,000, including combined direct and indirect costs, $200,000 per year for up to 2 years.

The Generation Google Scholarship 

The Generation Google Scholarship, for women in computer science, helps students pursuing computer science degrees excel in technology and become leaders in the field. 

Selected students will receive $2,500 USD for the 2025-2026 academic year. The scholarship is awarded based on the strength of each candidate’s demonstrated leadership, academic performance, and financial need.

Known as the internet’s ‘it girl,’ content creator and entrepreneur Allyiah Gainer has become the crown jewel of the YouTube scene. Referred to as Allyiah’s Face on her channel, Allyiah has garnered a loyal fan base of 2 million+ followers across all of her platforms and over 900K subscribers. Since starting her brand in 2015, the former FAMU student has become a staple in the digital beauty and fashion community, inviting viewers into her world and her life through her weekly vlogs. At the beginning of her YouTube journey, Allyiah began to amass her following by filming content such as fashion hauls and GRWMs. Now, years later, the influencer has expanded her reach into luxury and fashion spaces, working with brands such as Jimmy Choo, Tatcha Beauty, Amazon, and Marshalls. Most recently, Allyiah turned her love for fragrance into a collaboration with perfume brand Dossier to create two of her very own fragrances, ‘Better Days’ and ‘Of the Hour.’ The duo sold out within 24 hours, with Allyiah herself describing them as the perfect daytime and nighttime scent. In this interview, Allyiah shares her journey with YouTube, the challenges she’s faced, and what it was like partnering with Dossier.

Her Agenda: Tell us how you got started with vlogging and documenting your life, and what was that like in the beginning?

Allyiah Gainer: I did a chit chat, get ready with me. And everyone was like, oh, you need to talk more. We like that. That was very entertaining. We love your personality. From there, I kept doing that. Then Vlogmas came around in my second year on YouTube in December. And I was like, okay, cool, I’m gonna do Vlogmas. I vlogged, I did one episode, and people were like, we need more of this. I did Vlogmas that entire month. The feedback that I got was so great. I realized I really liked it. I used to vent. It just used to be kind of like a personal diary, if you will. I would get on my camera and say whatever. This was way back before anybody cared a lot about what I had to say. People were a lot kinder and treated it like they were talking with their homegirl. From there, I just kept doing it, and more and more people loved it. That’s really how it started. It was people telling me to do it, so I did it. They loved it, so I kept doing it. Now here we are.

Her Agenda: What was the moment that you realized being a content creator could be a sustainable career for you? 

Allyiah Gainer: It was when I quit my job to do it full-time. However, that would be a lie, because I wasn’t really making that much money from it at all. I think I was maybe making $1,200 a month, which is not a lot to live on. I’m a very rebellious person. I was working at MAC, and they wouldn’t give me the time off that I wanted, so I quit. And I was like, okay, well then I quit. You would think that I would say that my social media career was lucrative, which it was not. Three and a half years in, I realized that this would be lucrative for me when I got a 12-month contract with a hair company back when I used to wear wigs. I used to do hair influencing heavily on YouTube. That would always be a part of my vlog. I would usually start the vlog off with a new wig. I got a year-long contract that was gonna pay me basically around five to seven grand a month just to talk about wigs. I thought, oh, I’ve made it, and I can make money doing this for real. In that moment, that’s when I moved to Atlanta. I was like, yeah, like we’re going big time.

Her Agenda: What challenges have you faced as a content creator, and how did you overcome them?

Allyiah Gainer: One of the really big challenges that I faced was from being online for so long; your digital footprint is very real. You look back at young you and you’re like, I cannot believe I wore that, or that I said that. Having it on video or photo for years, when you go back and look, you’re like, yo, what the h*ll? I think it’s important learning boundaries on what to post because young me didn’t have any. Anything and everything would get posted. I didn’t care because I didn’t realize the amount of people who had access to it. While I have created such a beautiful community online, it isn’t gated; anyone can join. Anyone can take, perceive, and do with whatever I post online as they wish or will. So, being a lot more conscious of just making sure that whatever I’m posting, I am comfortable with it being representative of me to any and everybody that comes across it. I think every content creator will tell you about the hate comments and criticism. I’ve been in this for so long, I truly have built what they call tough skin. I genuinely feel like people don’t think they’re talking to Allyiah. When I think about it like that, it alleviates any anxiety or negative feelings that come with criticism.

Her Agenda: What would you say has been the most rewarding part of your journey so far? 

Allyiah Gainer: I would say something for me that’s extremely rewarding from my journey is that some of the people who were watching me in 2015, before I even ever posted a vlog, are still watching me to this day. I can recognize them, and they still comment. I’ve been doing YouTube for over 10 years, and I don’t have a million followers. I don’t have a million followers on any platform. I truly believe that my platform is an example of slow and steady wins the race. While my growth number-wise is “slower,” the level of connection that I’ve built with my audience is so immense. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel like being a place where people can come to just simply relax, enjoy, or just have a moment of disconnection from whatever they’re going through is valuable. I’ve had people express to me how I’ve been able to get them through dark places just by posting my silly videos and just feeling like they have someone there with them. 

Her Agenda: Most of your life is mostly on camera, but what are some ways that you de-stress when you need a break from vlogging? 

Allyiah Gainer: I sleep. I love a good old nap, a good old sleep. For me, it’s about finding boundaries of what works for me online and what doesn’t, so that I don’t experience that kind of burnout. I really do save a lot of things in my life for offline, such as romantic relationships and family. I feel like it helps to keep work and personal life separate because in content creation or influencing, especially [for] lifestyle creators, the overlap is heavy. At this point, we’ve gotten to where the authentic life that you live has now become your content. Sometimes you have to put in strong boundaries to separate the two so that you can have a moment to decompress and relax.

Her Agenda: Within the next five years, what are you hoping to accomplish with your career? 

Allyiah Gainer: I feel as long as I have a platform that people are interested in tuning into, and it’s still fun for me, I would absolutely love to continue creating content until it’sn’t fun anymore. As far as my brand, we have some things in the works. That’s all I can say for now.

Her Agenda: You’ve been a Dossier girl for many years. What was it like in that moment to find out you’re getting a Dossier collab?

Allyiah Gainer: It was actually really shocking for me because I’m not an expert; I just love good-smelling perfumes. When I brought fragrance into my channel, it was just me kind of exploring. I was never technical with terminology. I’ve never researched deep into the back ends of perfumes. When they came to me, I was like ‘oh no, I think you guys need a professional.’ They were like ‘no no no no we want you.’ My manager was like ‘girl, stop thinking like that. They want your nose, and they want your vibe, your feel, to create something that they can’t do on their own.’ It felt surreal. I do experience a little bit of imposter syndrome sometimes. I used to think that was a bad thing, but I watched a Mel Robbins podcast the other day. I’m tuned into her podcast, and she said, imposter syndrome is a good feeling because it’s showing that you’re trying something new. I was like, you know what? She’s right. Screw it. I feel good about this. It felt crazy. I was excited, but nervous, because this was my first product adventure; however, it was really fun in the end. That was a complete 360 moment, considering that Dossier used to sponsor me when I first started. I feel like Dossier is a lot of Black girl vloggers’ first sponsorships. They were a brand that invested in our community. It was really, really nice to be able to create something with them. 

Her Agenda: What was the inspiration behind your Dossier fragrances? How did you go about picking the scents? 

Allyiah Gainer: When they first approached, the idea was that we were just going to do one perfume. I was like, love that, but I would really like to do two. I asked [if] I could do two perfumes because I’m a multifaceted person. My interests in life vary. Like my taste in perfume, style, and food, everything is just so multifaceted that I felt I could not conjure myself up in one bottle. Even two was hard. I wanted to channel my bubbly personality, that aspect of myself, in my daytime scent. Obviously, you can wear it at any time of the day or any part of the year, but it is marketed as a daytime scent. It’s a bit lighter, flirtier, and very inviting. It’s such a breath of fresh air in my opinion. That was for that first fragrance.

For the second one, I really wanted to channel the sexy, almost baddie-esque moment. I feel like if you see me by day, you’re like, oh, she’s such a sweetie cutie patootie. Then at night, I mean, a girl’s going out, you’re like, oh, I didn’t know you had that in you. That’s what I wanted my perfumes to be. I wanted them to be complete opposites, but they work so well together.

Her Agenda: What advice would you give to us as young women who want to get into starting a YouTube channel? 

Allyiah Gainer: They’re not going to like this, but my big piece of advice is that you need to figure out what your why is. What I mean by that is with the emergence of social media, in all of these new forms, we are seeing that people are getting rich from this. There are different motivators as to why you want to be a content creator.

When I started, we didn’t know people were rich. I don’t even think people were rich yet in 2015, off of social media. Quote me if I’m wrong, but we didn’t know that. So our whys back then were truly out of just having a hobby or a talent or maybe a lack of community to share your interests with. That’s what mine was. For the girls who are starting now, you have to be honest with your why, because I feel like sometimes people aren’t honest about their why. If your why is because you just like to create, then you won’t really find any difficulty in anything. If it’s going to become lucrative, especially on YouTube, it’s going to be slow. It took a minute for me. You have to play the long game, girls.

If you’re doing this because you’re like, you know what? I’m seeing that people are making money. I want a cut of the pie. Then I think that there are a lot of strategic ways that you can do your content and your platform so that you’re able to monetize very quickly and effectively. If you’re someone who wants to garner a true community and share whatever it is you want to share, whether it’s your personality, makeup, hair, whatever, do it and have fun with it. It takes time, but it’s worth it. Whatever comes of it, you have to be grateful for it. 

Her Agenda: Who is Allyiah in a nutshell?

Allyiah Gainer: What I would say is, one thing about me, I’m always going to be okay, and I’m always going to do what I want to do. That’s just what I do.

Chain Store Age reports that in-store shopping will remain key for last-minute shoppers, with 88% planning to spend in physical stores. Shopping centers will also be an important destination, with nearly eight-in-10 (79%) shoppers planning to visit a retail property, led by Gen Z (89%) and millennials (86%).

PCOS/Endometriosis

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynecologic disorder, affecting up to 20% of women during their reproductive age, normally between 15 and 49 years old. PCOS comes with a variety of other symptoms such as anovulation, polycystic ovaries, and weight gain.

Though endometriosis, a condition causing outgrowths on the reproductive track, is a different health condition, it tends to coexist in women with PCOS.

Both diseases can cause heavy bleeding and pelvic pain, making life difficult for women. Though both diseases are common, they are often misdiagnosed.

Autoimmune Diseases

According to Standford University, out of approximately 24-50 millions of Americans who have autoimmune diseases, 4 out of 5 of them are Women.

Stroke

Each year, strokes kill more women than men. women and men are at higher risk for stroke if they are a person of color, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or have a history of smoking.

Thousands of tech conferences take place annually, with fall and winter being top seasons for critical conversations within the industry taking place.

As the conference season unfolds, women in technology are gathering at major events worldwide to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities shaping the industry’s future. From AI ethics to leadership diversity, this year’s gatherings reflect a pivotal moment where innovation meets inclusion, and where conversations about technology’s trajectory increasingly center on who builds it and for whom.

The Grace Hopper Celebration took center stage, with its 2025 edition running from November 4-7 in Chicago. With over 30,000 attendees and 600 speakers, it remains the world’s largest gathering for women in technology. This year’s “Unbound” theme emphasized breaking free from structural limitations, societal expectations, and internal doubts that have historically defined women’s professional narratives.

Web Summit returned to Lisbon from November 10-13, bringing together over 70,000 attendees from more than 160 countries. The event features a dedicated women in tech program aimed at balancing gender ratios and building a more inclusive tech industry through networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and discounted tickets for women attendees. The conference includes an official AI Summit track, exploring how artificial intelligence is designing intelligence and disrupting society, with dedicated sessions on AI ethics and societal impact.

Regional events also made significant contributions. The Women in Insurance Tech Conference took place November 12-13 in Boston, bringing together female leaders, entrepreneurs, and tech innovators from across the insurance and insurtech sectors. 

The Female Quotient’s second annual AI Summit occured on November 12 in New York City, focusing on practical conversations about putting AI to work, with expectations of over 450 attendees and 35 speakers.

Artificial intelligence dominated the agenda, but not just as a technical achievement. The emphasis has shifted from early curiosity to real adoption and business outcomes, with a focus on playbooks, proof, and people, specifically ensuring women are leading in the AI revolution.

For instance, at specialized events like the Women in AI Summit, discussions center on AI governance, generative AI adoption, and responsible AI at scale, turning ethics into action rather than an abstract principle. 

UNESCO’s Women4Ethical AI platform also addresses how AI technologies can perpetuate or challenge existing gender biases, examining issues from gender stereotypes in generative AI outputs to women’s representation in AI development and deployment.

Leadership Diversity and DEI in Focus

This year’s Grace Hopper programming emphasized wealth creation, career advancement, pay equity, entrepreneurship, and long-term financial strategy, which is a recognition that true diversity requires addressing systemic economic barriers, not just representation.

Industry research shows that organizations with good representation of women on their boards report 10% higher financial performance than counterparts with all-male or minimal women representation. Yet women make up less than 25% of those working as AI specialists and even less in technical leadership roles.

The conversation has evolved beyond simple inclusion metrics. Conference tracks now explore building diverse tech teams, navigating leadership challenges, LGBTQ and women’s leadership journeys, and retention strategies for remote-first teams. Events feature executives who have earned recognition as top AI leaders and thought leaders in agentic and generative AI, demonstrating that women are already shaping the field’s cutting edge.

A Mounting Priority In Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity concerns in 2024 have centered on AI’s dual nature, improving data protection and threat detection while also being weaponized by threat actors to accelerate social engineering attacks. 

The cybersecurity landscape for 2025 is being influenced by generative AI evolution, digital decentralization, supply chain interdependencies, regulatory changes, endemic talent shortages, and a constantly evolving threat environment, according to Microsoft.

A critical emerging concern is cybersecurity burnout and its organizational impact, with industry leaders recognizing the need to invest in teamwide wellbeing initiatives that demonstrably improve personal resilience.

Her Agenda spoke with both women about The Look, working alongside a global icon, and how they’re shaping conversations around beauty and representation that reach far beyond the chair.

Her Agenda: How did you both get your start in hair? Has hair always been a passion?

Njeri: It started with me going to the hair salon with my mother every other weekend. It started as early as elementary school, and I remember just being fascinated by the art of it all. I was in community college, not by choice, it was more so having Jamaican parents, and education is key. However halfway through it I decided it wasn’t for me and hair was a hobby I enjoyed it, so I enrolled into cosmetology school.

Yene: We have a lot of similarities. I went to cosmetology school at the age of 16. My fascinations with hair probably grew at a very early age. And what drew me in was on Sunday mornings my mother used to put hot rollers in her hair and go into the shower. It was super fascinating to me how it all worked out. I’m like wow you’re putting all these things in your head and all of a sudden you have this bounce; and that’s where the interest first sparked.

Her Agenda:  What does it mean to both of you to be a part of the former First Lady’s team?

Yene: She is no different than any other person that is trying to look and feel their best. That interpersonal relationship – being there to share good, bad, highs and lows with somebody – is what this industry is about. So for me having that privilege to understand that someone of that stature is just like every single one of us, and we always idolize people in that position, but to realize that they’re human beings, that’s the feel good that they’re able to pour back into you the same way that you pour into them, and it’s mutual. 

Njeri: I agree, I echo everything Yene is saying, but when people ask ‘What is she like?’ I’m like ‘What you see is what you get.’ [She’s a] real authentic, black woman, who is out here trying to make a mark on the world, and is trying to survive. While also spreading light and wisdom throughout, she’s also trying to show up as her best everyday.

Her Agenda: How long have both of you been with Michelle Obama?

Yene: I started in 2009 with the family. My primary focus was Ms. Robinson (Michelle’s mother) and the girls (Malia and Sasha). And then I stood in as a backup for Johnny Wright, who was her primary hair stylist throughout the White House years. And then I started as her colorist in 2012. So we’ve been with her for over [a] decade.

Njeri: I started in 2010, brought in by Yene, to work under Johnny Wright as his second assistant. And I was also more so helping with the girls along with Yene. I came out of the shadows in 2022 for “The Light We Carry” tour when she debuted her braids. 

Her Agenda: What has it been like working with Michelle Obama, creating looks, and being featured in her Look book?

Yene: The book was comprised in a way of storytelling. The book was [written] to be nostalgic and to share and highlight the processes and explain her time starting prior to the White House, going into the White House, and her post life. For me it was more about sharing my story as it relates to working with her, and talking about how we connected, how we began working with one another. Then there’s the part of our work being featured because we’re a part of these historical moments.

Njeri: You said it all. Honestly we’ve been here, we’ve been grinding. We’ve been doing what it is that we love to do. Not necessarily looking for the recognition, yes it’s great, I appreciate it all; but we show up and work hard, not looking for clout. It is great to be acknowledged now after so many years, and that’s a testament to our loyalty and our dedication and hard work.

Her Agenda: When it comes to hair, do you all have a motto?

Yene: “Good hair is healthy hair.”

Njeri: That part! You took the words out of my mouth!

“[The industry] won’t change on its own,” said Carrie Bloxson, Chief People Officer at Hachette Book Group. “It’s going to change when people like the ones in this room show up, speak up, and lead with purpose. That is the work. And that is the invitation for tonight.”

And so began “Off The Page: The Women Changing Publishing and Media” on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Hachette Book Group offices in Midtown Manhattan. 

Hosted by Her Agenda, in partnership with Hachette and its Women in Publishing employee resource group, the panel, moderated by Founder and CEO of Her Agenda, Rhonesha Byng, included some powerhouse voices transforming the industry: 

  • Eboni K. Williams:  Humanitarian, Attorney, Author, Television Host
  • Debbie Millman: Designer, Author, Educator, Brand Consultant, Host of the Webby-winning podcast ‘Design Matters’
  • Shannon Downey: Artist, activist, and founder of Badass Cross Stitch and Seriously Badass Women

Before the panel, attendees were treated to a “Lightning Talk” between facilitator Sojourner Elleby, Digital & Social Media Manager at Hachette Book Group, and Sally Kim, President & Publisher of Little, Brown and Company, that offered an insider’s look at the power of diverse voices in the publishing industry. 

The evening offered several takeaways to inspire action ON and OFF the page.

Your Identity Is Your Super Power

When Sally first started in publishing, there weren’t many people who looked like her. Today, she is the first Asian American person to lead a major publishing house. She said she has come to recognize that her identity is her superpower. In fact, everybody’s is. Background, as we know, shapes perspective. 

“It affects everything I do,” she said. “I expect everybody to bring their full selves.”

Shannon said she does this by using her art to challenge power, build community, and activate others.

“Craft is just the tool I use,” she said. “I’m an activist.” 

Eboni said she leans into the fullness of her identity, even if it may seem like a contradiction to others. As a former criminal defense attorney, a pageant queen, an intellect and a reality TV star, she said she fully embraces her dualities, which allows her to live life as true to herself as possible. 

“I don’t make decisions by committee,” she said. “I know best for me.”

And if others don’t like it? That’s fine, she said.

“If you’re going to have the audacity in this world to be anybody, let alone a woman, and let alone a woman with some melanin and any other additive identities (seen or unseen), you would do yourself well to get very comfortable being unliked,” she said. “I will be the villain in your story, as long as it affords me peace.”

It’s Not Always About How You Start, It’s How You Finish

One of the biggest takeaways from the evening was that success is not linear. 

“I came into book publishing as a failed writer,” Sally said, after discussing how even though her dream was to become a journalist, she later realized that what she really loved was helping others shape their stories. 

The rest of the panel shared similar stories of the twists and turns that contributed to their success. 

Shannon, for example, never set out to write a book. In fact, when she was first contacted by literary agents, she assumed it was a scam. Although they wanted a craft book, she insisted on an activism one, except she didn’t know what that could be. It wasn’t until two years later that the vision came, and she was able to write her manuscript. 

Debbie, in contrast, had always dreamt of writing a book. After pitching some ideas, she was politely turned down. However, opportunity came-a-knocking a few months later when a friend passed on a book proposal and recommended her instead. 

Eboni transitioned from a criminal defense lawyer to mass media because she wanted a more immediate impact. While at Fox News, Roger Ailes encouraged her to “sell something,” prompting her to pitch “Pretty Powerful.” When publishers realized it wasn’t a conservative book, they backed out. She returned the advance and published with a smaller press instead. Her second book pitch was initially rejected as well, but she maintained a good relationship with the publisher, and when the right time came, her book was published.

You Sometimes Have To Build Your Own Stage

Debbie said if you want something, you must make the first ask. If this is what you want to do, you must take the steps to make it happen. Build the room you want to be invited to. 

The panel shared some additional actionable tips: 

  • “Keep relationships warm.” – Eboni

It’s all about people and connection. A rejection can turn into an opportunity later on.

  • “Anything worthwhile takes time.” – Debbie

If you are a multifaceted person who likes to do a lot of things, you must have patience. Mastery and acknowledgement may take a while. 

  • “Be together in community in real life.” – Shannon

A big social media platform, all panelists agreed, is helpful, but connecting with people in real life is what really moves the needle. 

For those who do not have a huge following, Debbie advised working with a publisher that matches your efforts and puts in as much energy into promoting your book as you do.

As fall arrives and the risk of seasonal affective disorder increases, so do those negative Debbie Downer thoughts and ideas. As the cold winter months approach it is easier to isolate, and feed into negative thoughts and feelings.

Her Agenda has gathered information from therapists on how to combat those thoughts before they become too intrusive.

What Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Is

“Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a clinically recognized pattern of depression that shows up in a seasonal rhythm,” said Beatriz Victoria Albina, NP, MPH, SEP, Nurse Practitioner, Certified Life Coach, and author of End Emotional Outsourcing. “It’s more than missing summer or wishing for more sunlight. People with SAD experience predictable cycles of low mood that arrive with the change in seasons, most often in fall and winter, though some folks experience it in the summer months.

Furthermore, Beatriz says for many, winter-pattern SAD looks like fatigue, sadness, changes in sleep or appetite, and withdrawing from social life. In the summer version, people might find themselves restless, unable to sleep, losing appetite, or feeling more anxious. What makes this a disorder rather than a seasonal quirk is that it disrupts daily life.

How Does It Present Differently In Different People?

“Each individual may present a bit differently if suffering from SAD but in many cases, people may isolate more, withdraw from social settings, sleep more and lose pleasure in things they normally enjoy and love,” said Jennifer Kelman, JustAnswer Therapist and LCSW .

”These are the very things needed in order to move through this time, but many find it hard to keep up with daily routines,” Jennifer said. “As the leaves begin to fall, days become shorter, and less light is around, people prone to SAD may begin to experience symptoms.”

What Triggers SAD?

Alicia Armstrong, LMFT, Pathlight Mood & Anxiety Center Clinical Director of Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program, says SAD, like all major depressive disorders, is the result of a biochemical imbalance. Unlike typical major depression, it’s triggered by seasonal changes that impact our biology:

  • Sunlight plays a huge role in well-being. Exposure to sunlight impacts our circadian rhythm and the hormones and neurotransmitters our bodies produce to help keep us functioning optimally.
  • Lack of sunlight significantly decreases our Vitamin D levels, and Vitamin D plays a critical role in the creation of serotonin – the neurotransmitter needed in our brains to feel happy. Without enough sunlight, we see an increase in melatonin, which is the hormone that allows us to feel sleepy at night.

Steps To Combat SAD

According to Dr. Sanam Hafeez (she/her), NYC Neuropsychologist, Director of Comprehend the Mind, here are specific steps people can take to combat it SAD:

Increase light exposure – Spend more time outdoors during the day or use a light therapy lamp to make up for the loss of natural sunlight.

Stay physically active – Regular exercise boosts mood, improves sleep, and helps regulate energy levels during the darker months.

Keep a steady routine – Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day helps reset the body’s internal clock.

Seek support and treatment – Talking with a therapist, joining support groups, or using prescribed medication can ease symptoms and prevent them from worsening.

Focus on nutrition – Eating balanced meals with enough protein, fruits, and vegetables can help stabilize mood and energy.

Plan enjoyable activities – Scheduling social events, hobbies, or short trips gives structure and something positive to look forward to.

Limit alcohol and excess caffeine – Both can interfere with sleep and make mood swings or fatigue worse over time.

As reported by AARP, as of 2020, approximately 24% of caregivers in the United States are millennials. Furthermore, almost three in four millennial family caregivers are employed, and they are more likely than other generations of caregivers to be working. One in three employed millennial family caregivers earns less than $30,000 per year.

Millennials are actively taking on the position of caretaker. This also makes it hard to move out due to this large responsibility. While caretaking is an enormous task, many millennials also work fulltime as well.

A Lack Of A Safety Net Means It’s All On You

Millennials are the poster child for entrepreneurship. With the likes of social media, small businesses, and the arts, millennials aren’t afraid to go against the regular 9 to 5; however, where millennials lack is creating a safety net with insurance.

Liberty Mutual Group says that millennials may be pursuing entrepreneurship, but they take more personal liability risks than any other generation.  According to a recent study conducted by Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of the largest small business insurers, only 12 percent of millennials who own their own business have business insurance, even though they are known for being the biggest worriers when it comes to their small business endeavors given the potential for financial loss.   

In conclusion, millennial small business owners are unaware of what insurance is needed when it comes to their small business, putting them, and in some cases their employees, at risk. Many worry about the financial commitment (35%) compared to Boomers (29%), leading them to skimp on basic protection needed.

Once you enter your 30s, a certain magic happens, and the minute things you used to obsess about suddenly have no value. Enter Mid-30s and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) turns into JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). It’s as if a weight is lifted and you appreciate the simple things in life, like purchasing a new comforter set… well, at least for me at age 36.

What Causes FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)?

Though it’s impossible to be everywhere at once, in this day and age, it’s impossible not to see what’s going on thanks to social media. The feeling of being left out, forgotten, and missing experiences can become heavy and uneasy to grasp.

According to Sci-Tech Today:

  • 65 to 70% of millennials especially say they feel FOMO when it comes to events and experiences.
  • In crypto markets, 60 to 80% of retail traders report that at least some FOMO influences their decisions.
  • A huge 93% of Gen-Z admit to losing sleep due to checking social media late at night.
  • Higher FoMO correlates with higher anxiety, depression, and worse sleep, and some studies show interventions like limiting social media can reduce loneliness and depressive symptoms.
  • During COVID, social media usage jumped by 25 to 47%, which likely stoked more FOMO.
  • Behaviorally, FOMO drives impulsive buying, binge-drinking, distracted phone use, and compulsive brand behavior, especially in younger people.

“Psychologically, this stage often brings a natural reevaluation of priorities,” Sarah said. “The brain and body have weathered enough experiences to recognize that chasing every opportunity isn’t the same as living fully. What used to feel like “missing out” now feels more like curating: choosing what actually aligns with personal values, relationships, and deeper fulfillment.”

The Positive Effects Of JOMO

With age and development JOMO presents a sense of relief and reassurance of oneself. It also allows you the opportunity to understand that it’s okay to be okay with not being a part of something. There’s no anxiety attached to joy, only peace.

If you’re looking for the perfect recipe to get to JOMO, simply do the opposite of what you’re doing now. For example: If you’re mad that a friend is going to dinner without you and you see them posting on social media, simply log off and find a reason to be grateful. You can choose to be grateful to have food at home and redirect your energy into doing something reciprocal like starting a garden, or treating yourself to dinner. It’s all about perspective.

Delivery Robots

Autonomous delivery robots are gaining momentum in major cities like Chicago and Los Angeles as restaurants and retailers look to improve efficiency, cut costs, and meet rising demand for faster, more reliable deliveries.. These robots use advanced navigation systems, cameras, and sensors to safely transport orders from businesses to customers, reducing reliance on human couriers.

In Los Angeles, fast-casual burger chain Shake Shack partnered with Serve Robotics and Uber Eats to offer robot deliveries at select locations. These robots navigate sidewalks using advanced mapping technology to deliver food directly to customers without human involvement.

Globally, in places such as Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, and Helsinki, Coco delivery robots are helping businesses fulfill local orders using small, wheeled robots that travel on sidewalks.  Unlike traditional bike or car deliveries, these robots bypass traffic, lower delivery costs, and improve order fulfillment efficiency. Coco uses QR Codes displayed on the outside of each robot to help businesses accurately fulfill orders.

Coco robots are used in collaboration with companies such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, and OpenAI.

Beyond food delivery, Vayu Robotics has developed an on-road, AI-powered delivery robot designed to operate without expensive lidar sensors, a technology that uses pulses of laser light typically used in drones for aerial and 3D mapping.

Instead, it uses a more affordable vision-based system to transport goods, making last-mile logistics more scalable and accessible for retailers and e-commerce brands.

Drone Deliveries

Drones are helping to reduce delivery issues in urban and rural areas, such as traffic congestion, long wait times, and infrastructure limitations. Equipped with advanced navigation systems and AI-powered flight controls, drones can transport goods quickly and efficiently. PwC projected drones will complete about 14,000 deliveries per day, adding up to nearly five million B2C deliveries globally in 2024.

One of the leading players in this space, Zipline, has already completed over 1.4 million deliveries and is rapidly expanding its operations across Africa and the United States. Zipline’s drones use precision airdrop technology to deliver medical supplies, groceries, and retail goods to hard-to-reach locations. This is particularly valuable for health care providers and logistics companies looking to serve remote or underserved communities.

Big-box retailers such as Walmart are expanding their drone delivery networks to offer faster and, in some cases, same-day delivery. Dallas has become a key testing ground city for Walmart’s aerial delivery program, where the retailer has partnered with Wing, Alphabet’s drone delivery subsidiary, to offer same-day deliveries for select products. The drones can deliver small orders, such as groceries, household essentials, and pharmacy items, in as little as 30 minutes, reducing wait times for customers. QR Codes on the ground assist in landing the Wing drones back at home base.

AI-Driven Shopping

Artificial intelligence is redefining how consumers shop by enabling frictionless checkout, personalized shopping experiences, and smarter inventory management.

Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology uses AI-powered sensors and machine learning to allow shoppers to grab and go without checking out at a register. Purchases are automatically charged to shoppers’ accounts. The technology has been used at Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores across the United States, with plans for broader adoption in high-traffic convenience stores and concession areas.

Blockchain platform Pundi X launched PundiPay for merchants. In this system, retailers can generate and display a QR Code that allows customers to pay with crypto on their devices. 

With more consumers interested in using AI technology in their retail experience for convenience, many retailers have begun integrating AI-driven technologies to boost customer satisfaction. This includes AI-powered product recommendations, automated restocking, and smarter inventory management.

Spatial Computing

Spatial computing merges digital and physical retail spaces to create interactive shopping environments. AI technology leverages augmented reality to provide shoppers with advanced features such as virtual try-ons, AI-powered store navigation, and personalized digital displays that respond to real-time customer behavior.

Millions of Olympics enthusiasts got to experience one such concept at the 2024 Paris Olympics with retail giant Alibaba’s Wonder Avenue pop-up, a 289-foot-long showcase of shopping technology that blends physical and digital experiences. Shoppers went through different areas in the showcase where they could create personal avatars, digitally “try on” products via their avatars to imagine their perfect looks, and even pick out cosmetics and fragrances based on tailored recommendations from a smart assistant.

Other spatial computing applications include AI-powered navigation systems that help customers find store products quickly by providing real-time directions within large retail spaces, such as malls. Interactive digital displays facilitated by QR Codes on products or in catalogs can also help customers design a product they will eventually purchase, such as how Ikea used AR apps to help buyers imagine what furniture and decor will look like in their homes.

Latinas in tech aren’t just showing up — they’re reshaping the future of AI. Whether launching startups, leading policy talks, or building community from the ground up, these women are weaving their lived experiences into every layer of innovation. They’re not just coding or creating — they’re calling for ethical AI, real accountability, and equity across the board. Their presence proves that when Latinas lead in tech, the entire AI ecosystem gets smarter, more inclusive, and undeniably stronger.

One clear way Latinas are leading is by building AI tools that prioritize fairness and representation. Laura I. Gómez, an early tech disrupter and founder of Atipica, created a recruitment platform that combines artificial and human intelligence to reduce bias in hiring. Having worked at Google, Twitter, and YouTube, Gómez saw firsthand how tech companies often overlooked gaps in diversity and inclusion efforts.

“I grew up in the heart of the San Francisco Bay area… which happens to be the home of Silicon Valley. And so, having grown up in Silicon Valley, I was used to access to computers at school. Early on, I was learning English and computers,” she shared in an interview with Milwaukee Film. “My story is that I am an immigrant. My birthplace is in Mexico but as a bi-cultural immigrant who grew up in the United States. My hometown and my country is this. It is Redwood City. It is the United States. That’s why it’s important to hold accountable how we’re treating and making sure that all types of populations are included in all types of systems including technology, including science, including financial and professional opportunities.” 

When asked about what prompted the founding of the company, she shared that it came from a frustrating experience while speaking on a panel that included the Rev. Jesse Jackson and several tech executives. 

“It was [about] the pipeline issue—always talking about, ‘Well, there aren’t enough, you know, people of color or women graduating with these degrees or etc.,” she said.

“[Atipica] definitely was something where you’re using AI for good,” she said. “You’re using AI to understand what’s happening in your pipeline. Maybe I’m applying to a corporation, and I’m applying to this job, but somewhere else in that corporation, there’s the right job for me. Why can’t AI make that match and then reduce the biases? Don’t say, ‘It’s Laura Gomez.’ Don’t say where I live, because those are all biases. Don’t say, like, the school I went to. Just say, ‘This person is a match. You should talk to them.’“

Latinas In Tech Advocating For Inclusion And Community AI Literacy

Latinas are also expanding inclusive education and community networks in AI. Gabriela de Queiroz, director of AI at Microsoft, co-founded R-Ladies Global, a worldwide organization that promotes gender diversity in the R programming language community. She also leads AI Inclusive, which provides support and visibility for underrepresented groups in machine learning and data science. Through her work, thousands of women and non-binary individuals now have access to resources and networks once out of reach—proving that community can be as powerful as code when it comes to building tech that works for everyone.

Another key area of leadership is public AI literacy and advocacy for communities of color. Susan Gonzales, CEO of the nonprofit AIandYou, is working to ensure that marginalized communities not only understand how AI will shape their futures—but have a voice in how it’s built. Her organization has launched compelling campaigns like using AI misinformation to fight AI misinformation, and she co-authored “A Blueprint for Equity and Inclusion in AI”, released by the World Economic Forum.

“I first learned about AI when I was at Facebook about eight years ago,” she shared in a 2024 interview. “Believe it or not, this new technology was allowing the blind community to access a platform. I thought that was really cool, and I just was very curious. And so over the years, I just kept following it. I’m not an engineer. I was on the policy side of things. When I left the company about over four years ago, I realized there was a chasm between the AI ecosystem and marginalized communities, pretty much everybody else.”

Holding Companies Accountable In A Troubling DEI Landscape

Across the tech landscape, Latina entrepreneurs and researchers are pushing the field forward while holding it accountable. Gemma Galdón-Clavell, founder of Eticas.ai, is building a framework for auditing algorithms to ensure they operate transparently and ethically—especially in government and public infrastructure. Daniela Blanco, CEO of Sunthetics, is applying AI to chemical engineering to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, using machine learning to create sustainable solutions. 

Yovana Rosales, founder of Ai.Latina, is using AI to empower Latina entrepreneurs, showing them how to integrate emerging tech into their businesses with confidence and creativity. Jessica Santana, co-founder and CEO of America on Tech (formerly Brooklyn On Tech), has advocated for tech literacy via the national nonprofit preparing the next generation of technology leaders from underestimated communities through mentorship, training, and scholarships.

The organization recently launched an AI advisory board. “The launch of our AI Advisory Council and the transformation of TECH360 to an AI-focused program represent major milestones in our mission to prepare the next generation of technology leaders from underestimated communities,” she said in a news release. “By ensuring that AI education is accessible to all, we are fostering a new generation of tech leaders who will shape the industry’s future.”

Human-Centered AI Creating Opportunity Where It’s Needed Most

Other leaders include Saiph Savage, whose research on human-AI collaboration is being used to uplift rural and underserved communities across Latin America, and Ariel Lopez, founder of Knac, whose platform is tackling hiring discrimination using smart, inclusive technology.

Together, these women, along with many others, are not just participating in the future of AI—they’re actively changing the landscape and ensuriing that technology is used to empower not exploit. Through innovation, advocacy, and education, they are proving that accountability and excellence can, and must, coexist in the development of emerging technologies. Women, already a minority in tech, are also severely underrepresented in AI. Randstad’s 2024 AI & Equity report revealed that only 29% of AI-skilled workers are women.

With National AI Appreciation Day approaching, here are five women whose work is shaping AI to be more accessible, inclusive, and ethical.

Dr. Joy Buolamwini

Dr. Joy Buolamwini is considered an AI ethics leader and accountability advocate. Her research at MIT found racial and gender biases in facial recognition software from big companies like Microsoft and Amazon. These findings led her to found the Algorithmic Justice League, an organization dedicated to creating more equitable and accountable AI technology.

The AJL’s mission is to educate society about the impact of AI and prevent harm through advocacy, resource sharing, and the empowerment of communities and decision makers. A PBS documentary, Coded Bias, featured her work on algorithmic bias. She also wrote Unmasking AI to continue raising awareness on how ethics are essential in AI development.

Beverlyn Tsai’s recent research analyzed how people reacted emotionally to AI-generated political content versus human-generated content on social media. She found that AI images were more often associated with positive emotions like joy and optimism because they were more satirical. She wants her work to protect election integrity and raise awareness about misinformation and AI’s persuasiveness.

Beverlyn believes women’s emotional awareness is a vital component in AI technology development. 

“As a woman, I feel like I can tie that bridge together,” she said, when speaking about how she would like AI to develop ethically in connection with human emotions and mental health. 

Beverlyn wants to explore bias in AI training data because who trains it and where the data comes from can skew what it generates. She also promotes inclusive spaces like hackathons and Rewriting the Code to encourage more women into tech.

AccuTrain, a professional development platform for teachers, found in their research that, of those who use AI, 51 percent find it helpful in supporting students with learning differences, 41 percent apply it for generating lesson plans, and 40 percent to develop assignments.

Yet in recent Pew Research Center survey findings, 25 percent said use of AI in education does “more harm than good” in K-12 education settings. Teachers have cited issues including cheating and plagiarism, lack of  motivation to actually learn versus taking shortcuts and reductions in critical thinking.

Take the example of Sadiya Ishaq, a Houston teacher who used ChatGPT to show first-graders a future version of themselves based on their career aspirations. Reportedly inspired by a social media trend called “career doll,” students and their parents were brought to tears seeing a realistic manifestation of their dreams and becoming hopeful for achievement.

“Our school is also 50% Title One school, and a lot of our students don’t have certain role models around the community,” said teacher Sadiya Ishaq.

People who want to learn an additional language often download Duolingo. The popular language-learning resource dominated app stores for years, but the company recently made headlines for making a major change to its practices. Understanding what Duolingo’s “AI-first” announcement means could reveal where other educational apps might go and why they might adopt artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

What Did Duolingo Mean By Going AI-First?

Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn sent an email in April 2025 announcing that the company would reduce its reliance on contractors to write courses. Instead, the brand will use AI to generate lessons. The app made 148 new courses public within 48 hours of the announcement.

The brand’s “AI-first” business model also extends to hiring practices. The same announcement included details on how Duolingo’s recruiting department would hire new employees and conduct performance reviews with AI programs. 

How Would That Impact Duolingo Fans?

Languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian and Arabic are growing significantly in the United States, and Duolingo and other apps are contributing to the increasing diversity. Many Duolingo users feel divided about the company’s new business model. Users who once actively engaged with Duolingo and admired the brand’s online presence vowed to delete their accounts and even boycott the company after learning about the AI decision. 

Luis responded to the fans by taking a fast-action approach with a swift interview on Bloomberg Television. He explained how the company cares about its employees and said AI can help them manage their tasks better. He emphasized that rather than completely replacing human workers, the company will reduce contractor responsibilities when AI can handle them well. However, his answer did not address concerns about how the AI additions would affect the environment or what precautions Duolingo will take to ensure that AI answers are correct.

Many Duolingo users may not mind the change, given how AI features have been in the app for a while, such as video chats with Duolingo characters and AI feedback about grammar errors. Others might appreciate the quick access to extra courses if they progressed through what is available.

Could It Appeal To New Users?

Artificial intelligence has numerous potential advantages in a language-learning context. Programs could analyze a person’s speech patterns, which helps when you are learning to pronounce new words. If users pay for the Duolingo subscription, they can ask the AI to explain why it graded their answer as a mistake. AI can provide numerous explanations as needed, which could appeal to people who have never tried Duolingo before.

The recent AI updates also made the seven most popular languages available to all users speaking any of the 28 languages the app recognizes. Curious language learners may return for the courses they could not try before.

Will Other Language Learning Apps Follow Duolingo’s Lead?

Numerous language learning apps also use AI to some degree. Babbel, Memrise and Busuu are among the most popular. They use AI for similar purposes, such as checking answers and providing extra study opportunities. However, the companies haven’t announced any intentions to stop working with contractors.

Duolingo’s competitors could adopt the same business model if Duolingo regains its public reputation after the latest announcement and experiences significant growth. AI could add to business growth strategies in ways similar to expanding to new markets, depending on how each company’s consumers react. If additional people learn languages more easily with AI assistance, you can expect to see more AI-focused practices driving educational resources. 

AI Could Become More Important For Language-Centric Programs

The CEO of Duolingo took a significant step in making AI the center of future business practices. While the announcement received immediate negative feedback, AI is not new to the app either. Jay-Ann Lopez – Purpose Led Community

Jay-Ann Lopez has created a worldwide network and welcoming space for black women in gaming. She is the founder of Black Girl Gamers, which has grown to over 10,000 members and over 120,000 online followers.

Through Twitch streams, workshops, and brand partnerships, she’s raised attention to the seriousness of breaking the racial and gender gaps in gaming. Jay-Ann shared in a Refinery29 interview the key to longevity in equality is to “decenter, listen, understand, then support.” Her voice has become a mobilizing statement gaming players and leaders to prioritize belonging as much as gameplay.

Imane “Pokimane” Anys – From Streamer To CEO

Imane “Pokimane” Anys has millions of followers across Twitch and YouTube, and is easily one of the most well-known faces for women in the gaming industry. Imane spent 10 years dedicated to creating live stream content until last year when she shared a post on X, that her consistent streaming on Twitch has become “[an] end of an era.” Since then, Imane has co-founded RTS, a consulting firm in which she helps other creators and streamers maintain a successful and growing career, especially women who face harassment and exploitation.

Imane has been vocal in the past about her journey in prioritizing her mental health and peace, as she shared a post back in 2022 announcing her break from content. Imane’s decision to take a break inspired larger conversations around wellness, boundaries, and harassment. A Reach3 Insights’ study revealed that 59% use a non-gendered/male identity to avoid harassment while gaming. This has highlighted the true effect of perception on women in the gaming industry.

Leanne Loombe – Powering The New Frontier Of Games

The woman behind some of the biggest gaming platforms, is executive leader Leanne Loombe who has a ruse for strategic vision. She was the head of Riot Forge and executive producer of EA before being hired as the VP of External Games for Netflix Games. Leanne shared in an interview that, “the long-term goal was to have a game on Netflix for every one of our members and their taste.” She is closing the divide between visual narratives and interactive experiences. 

According to a 2024 Xsolla report, women account for approximately 30% of gaming industry professionals and hold a mere 16% of executive positions at the top fourteen global gaming companies. Leanne recently accepted the role of as executive vice president, head of games for Annapurna’s gaming operations. Her arrival comes as a renewal since then-president and other staffers resigned after business dealings fell through.

According to Claudia Giolitti-Wright, founder of Psychotherapy for Young Women, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. There are a variety of styles to pick from.

  • Freewriting: Letting your thoughts flow without editing. Whatever comes up is valid and welcome.
  • Prompt journaling: Using thoughtful questions to guide clients (Think: “What do I need right now?” or “What am I avoiding?”). We use this when we are trying to gain more clarity about a specific topic or process a specific event or fear.
  • Gratitude lists: A few small things you’re thankful for each day. This is especially powerful for anxiety and depression, which are conditions that impair your ability to feel safe and see the good things that are happening around you.
  • Mood or habit tracking: A great way to notice emotional or physical patterns. Another helpful one to gather information and gain clarity on mood fluctuations and emotional/behavioral patterns.
  • Letters you don’t send: A powerful way to get closure or connect with parts of yourself or loved ones you lost. You can also write letters to ones who have harmed or hurt you, which can be very therapeutic.

“Journaling can improve your mental health by improving your self-awareness, helping you identify triggers, how you respond to stress, and building emotional intelligence,” Jessica said.

“Journaling helps quiet the mental noise,” Claudia said. “When we’re overwhelmed or anxious, our thoughts can swirl in circles. Getting them out on paper helps us process what’s really going on, and sometimes just seeing it in front of us brings a huge sense of relief.”

Initiating Your Journaling Journey

The beauty of journaling is you make it what you want. There are no rules, and you get to personalize it to your standard.

“To make journaling feel more intentional and enjoyable, consider creating a calm environment, like playing soft music or lighting a favorite candle, to help you slow down and dedicate that time to yourself,” Jessica said.

Additionally, Jessica said if you prefer digital journaling, many apps now offer push notifications to remind you to write. You can try scheduling these reminders during natural breaks in your day or times that align with other existing habits.

If You’re Still Unsure About Journaling

“I hear this a lot: ‘I don’t know what to write’ or ‘I’m not a writer,’” Claudia said. “But journaling isn’t about being a good writer, it’s about giving yourself space to feel and reflect.”

Just give it a try and see if it changes anything for you. Then try another time in a different way. There are different styles and methods that resonate for each person, you just have to find yours.

Jessica suggests giving yourself grace along this journey because there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to journal, and Claudia says journaling doesn’t need to be fancy or profound. It just needs to feel like you.
